Audrey Hepburn’s Casual Wear…With A Twist

Audrey Hepburn…just the name evokes elegance and poise. Black capris with sweaters, headscarves with sunglasses, black dresses with pearls–no doubt, Audrey Hepburn is one of my top fashion idols.

I recently read an interview with Audrey talking about how she was most comfortable in a pair of capris paired with a collared shirt and a cardigan. I came across this picture of Audrey Hepburn wearing her beloved outfit when she was shooting her movie, Love in the Afternoon (a great movie by the way!)  She looked so comfortable and chic! I knew that I wanted to emulate an outfit like hers:

However–no offense to Audrey– I wanted to modernize her look a bit more so I restyled some elements. Here is the complete outfit inspired by the classy lady herself, but with a twist:

3.1

1. I kept Audrey’s basic structure with a polo shirt and cardigan. This dynamic duo combination is super comfortable! Make sure to find a comfortable cardigan like cashmere or cotton.

Here are some great cardigans for a good price. You can always try a preppy cardigan, or a more laid-back cardigan.

2. I’m obsessed with Audrey Hepburn’s pin-striped capris! However my closet is lacking a pair (but is definitely on my to buy list!). However I didn’t want to lose the texture the pin-striped pants had so I decided to go with a striped polo shirt.

A tip on using colors to complete a look: Take a multi-colored clothing and use it as a base to match each color with a different article of clothing or accessory.  Audrey does this by matching her red cardigan with the red stripes on her pants. I decided to match the green and blue stripes on my polo with a green cardigan and blue earrings.  Repeating the colors in throughout an outfit gives a polished and complete look.

3. Now for the modern twist: instead of capris, wear dark denim shorts. Instead of ballet flats, add a little spunk with combat boots. The shorts give the look a more hip and cool look while the combat boots really give a lot more attitude than ballet flats. Click here for really cute combat boots!

Inspired by the classiest lady herself, this outfit gives a look of elegance. However the pops of modernity like combat boots and shorts really give the outfit character and sass. Put those two combinations together and you get a perfect essence of Audrey Hepburn’s charm and grace.
